The rate of Christian persecution in the world today is very alarming and of daily increase. As you are reading this article right now, a Christian somewhere in this world is being brutally handled for simply identifying with Christ and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. that’s unthinkable.
What is Christian Persecution?
Who can give us an accurate definition of Christian Persecution if not the OPEN DOORS which specifically handles matters related to Christian Persecution.
According to OPEN DOORS, “Christian Persecution is any hostility experienced from the world as a result of one’s identification as a Christian”.
So, what qualifies one to get persecuted is to publicly identify with Christ. And this identification takes effect when one truly practices the teachings of Christ as written in the Holy Scriptures.
The above definition has in it, “The world”
In the Bible, the word ‘world’ refers to:
- The physical geographical structure of the planet earth.
- The inhabitants of the earth.
The ‘world’ mentioned in the above definition refers to the inhabitants of the earth, not the structural form of the world. but the human race. It also does not refer to the whole human race, like the faithful Christians, but to those who hate Christ both in their words and actions. And they physically and spiritually carry out their hatred activities through different means and method available.
They are as follows:
- The nations’ governments who are hostile to Christians because they are Christ’s followers
- Occultic organizations and clubs
- The towns and village traditional chiefs and rulers who view the Christians as enemies that go against the tradition of their fore-fathers and their land
- Satan and his followers
- Unbelievers who hate the Christians
- Those who practice false religion
- Parents, families, kindred and relatives who maltreat, harass, insult and beat those within them who are practicing the teachings of Christ and refuses to compromise and agree to their ungodly proposals
- Hypocritical church members who do not practice the teachings of Jesus Christ as taught in the Scriptures
Jesus made several references to the above groups and persons in His teachings, and during His prayers to the Father for us.
Lets consider a few things Christ said regarding the world (haters of Christ)
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first”. John 15:18
“So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known”. Matthew 10:26
“And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever-the Spirit of truth. The world can not accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you“. John 14:16-17
“Before long, the world will not see me any more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live“. John 15:19
You don’t need further explanation to understand that Jesus is referring to those who hate Him and His teachings in these Scripture verses above.
Though, persecution of Christians is as old as Christianity itself, from the time of Christ down to the time of the first apostles and those following them, and finally down to us. But there is something significant about the persecution of the Christians of this generation. The modern persecution is not more deadly because of the use of dangerous and highly sophisticated weapons, means, and styles. They had them those days according to their level of technological intelligence in their era, but the rate at which it occurs and the number of those being persecuted, killed, maimed, disgraced, imprisoned, restricted, etc. is greatly terrifying.
Examine this statistics
Apart from the rate at which persecution increases, it also seems that many of the modern persecutors are now on a payroll, well furnished and constitutionally protected and possessed immunity against prosecution. They have legal support and are of right standing with the ruling government and constituted authorities. Some have given in to it as for a career and a daily business that meets their financial needs, and you know what that means? You can imagine how it could be handled-what puts food on one’s table. Good business, more money. Bad business no pay.
According to Open Doors, 100 million Christians around the globe are currently suffering.
Imagine that number! It out numbered some countries’ population. And they are suffering because they got identified with Christ, they stood, and stand out for Christ. They refused to compromise their faith. They refused to renounce Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
WORLD WATCH LIST
The World Watch List is a ranking of the top 50 countries where Christians face the most severe persecution for their faith.
Each year, the World Watch List ranks the top 50 countries where Christians face the most persecution. Types of persecution, severity and other elements are all monitored in the reporting period. The world Watch List is audited by an outside Human Rights Organization to ensure credibility and authenticity.
What this means is that Christians in 50 countries of the world are suffering for their faith, and it takes place everyday.
Here is another statistics that will shock you
Why Are Christians Persecuted?
There are different reasons Christians are persecuted. But the primary reasons they are persecuted are :
- The world hates them
- The world hates Jesus the God of the Christians.
- Another reason is because they exercise their faith in Christ Jesus which mandates them to carry out the great commission “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation”. Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15.
- We do not belong to the world. “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you“. John 15:19
Because of the name of Jesus and not knowing God “They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me“. John 15:2
And the Christians are also meant to live a sanctified life as they carry out the great commission. It is in carrying out this great assignment and living a separate and honest life that they encounter oppositions and get persecuted.
Some who refuse to get involved in corruption at their work places are in danger of not only losing their jobs, but also being attacked by those who see them as obstacles. Some, following the successful promotions they get based on their transparent and honest dealings in their jobs, their unchristian colleagues get offended and threaten to shut them up. The same way Prophet Daniel was treated by his colleagues when he was promoted, which finally led to his being thrown into a lion’s den. Daniel 6:1-28
Other reasons for Christian persecution are traceable to selfishness, power, fame, popularity, authority and positions.
This calls for serious prayer on the part of Christians, especially those who only hear about persecution and havn’t been involved or witnessed one. Don’t say it is not happening to you therefore there’s no need to pray. There is every need to pray for the Church of Christ Many Christians are faced with inhuman daily threat to renounce their salvation.
Our prayer is not that God destroy these perpetrators of this heinous evil but that the power of the rising Lord Jesus Christ will rescue and protect His sons and daughters passing through this pain. And also, that God will grant conversion to the persecutors.
